Ok so as Dave said, we came up with a list of materials and divided up to find the prices for them.
Chalk board paint:
- 1 quart
- covers 10' x 10'
- $11 (I've seen somewhere else that was like $17)

Planters (i was thinking more of the rectangular concrete ones)
- These already made ones are ridiculously expensive. so i was thinking more that we can just buy concrete bricks and make it that way? It's possible right? correct me if I'm wrong.
- concrete bricks are like $.50. http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?keyword=concrete+brick&langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053
- so i think we can make one for around $15-20? And I think I am rounding up here. This is just the planter itself.
Moveable louvres (horizontal/vertical panel walls)
- This is kind of like how the blinds would work right?
- so i think we can look at it from blinds perspective, which varies from the size. Does this have to be wood? I mean I think it can be any material that is stiff enough right?
- this could just use the plywood correct? So from Daves prices, I am estimating that we would need 2 sheets? So round to $30.
Plexi
- http://www.homedepot.com/Building-Materials-Plexiglass/h_d1/N-5yc1vZbrdg/h_d2/Navigation?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053
- 6' x 3' is $100
- theres different sizes and different quality.
Metal tubing for just the frame
- http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-100337439/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053
- 96" for $10
- To go around a 4'x8' frame. It would cost around $30.
- This would be for if we just want to change the middle and replace it. So the frame would be consistent and would change out the inside.
What happens to the panels after?
- possibly reusing in stations, on the platforms while people are waiting.
- it can be taken apart to be used in constructions or intact to serve the same purpose in another construction.
- we can pick the creative ones and use as a gallery in parks? Kind of like the sculpture garden.
- planters can definitely be reused in parks and/or as a buffer between the sidewalk and the street.
For the materials, I am sure we can use recycled materials. We can go look for trash and use the trash to build these things. Old furniture, take it apart and use them.
i really like the concrete brick idea! were you thinking about putting plants in the hollow parts of the brick? cause that actually sounds pretty cool; i guess we would just have to figure out a way to seal the bottom. i remember from habitat how much of those bricks are just thrown out after demos. we could definitely salvage them and have kids/community join in and build their own planters and plant in them.
